Xtreme Reading teaches adolescent struggling readers the strategies, habits of learning, and knowledge regarding reading and literacy that are required to thrive in the 21st century. Xtreme Reading is a spiral reading curriculum that includes instruction in eight foundational Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) reading and motivation strategies across a single school year. Xtreme Reading is appropriate for students reading, minimally, at the fourth-grade level and appropriate for students who exhibit: · Poor reading fluency, · Small sight vocabularies, · Limited understanding of words and multiple word meanings, · Limited background and conceptual knowledge, · Few skills in using strategies that enhance understanding and remembering of oral and written language. Xtreme Reading is designed for middle school or high school students who read at a 4th-grade level but still fall at least two grade levels behind in their reading. The core of Xtreme Reading includes word-level strategies that help students decode, recognize words, build vocabulary, and read more fluently. It also includes three powerful comprehension strategies. In addition, the curriculum includes components that help teachers build a positive learning community based on high expectations. Daily Lessons are provided for each strategy unit. Daily lessons include a start-up activity, an advance organizer, strategy instruction and guided reading.
