Registration includes two 2.5 hour sessions on June 11th. Teacher/ SLP teams must attend together. ASHA/ KSHA Credit Available. Introduction to Core Vocabulary – This 2.0-hour professional learning session will introduce core vocabulary communication systems for students with significant disabilities and complex communication needs. We will highlight the development and use of this AAC tool combined with video clips for Aided Language Modeling for providing either low or high tech AAC option for students who need augmentative communication. Participants will receive packets to make a core folder. Teacher/SLP teams highly encouraged.. AHSA/KSHA credit is available. Agenda for Session – 2.0 hours: • What is Core Vocabulary? What is fringe vocabulary? • What are the KEY features of Core and Fringe Vocabulary? • Using Core Vocabulary and Aided Language Modeling • Making a Core Folder Core Vocabulary Communication Curriculum Strategies – This 2.0-hour professional learning session will focus on using Core Vocabulary in literacy activities such as Core Word(s) of the week, Core vocabulary in books, sentence writing, music, science, as well as creating other communication opportunities using core word strategies. Using games and peers to engage in communication with core words. Participants will plan a core word lesson. Teacher/SLP teams highly encouraged – ASHA/KSHA credit available. Agenda for Session – 2.0 hours: • Implementing Core Word of the Week Curriculum • Using books to highlight Core Words • Using Classroom Core boards to teach sentence structure • Using core words in class routines, music, science, games • Engaging families and peer supports in core modeling Participants MUST come in teams of at least 1 sped teacher and 1 speech-language therapist.
NOTE: Materials for an afternoon make and take will be delivered to the local Board of Education prior to the training. The registration deadline will allow for this to occur. A SESC Consultant will contact you with details.
